Mum's the Word

Fall is a season of vibrant colors, and one way to enhance the beauty of your garden or outdoor space is by planting chrysanthemums, commonly known as mums. These hardy and colorful flowers are a symbol of autumn and can bring life and charm to your garden well into the cooler months. In this guide, we'll show you how to plant mums in the fall for a burst of autumn color.

1. Select the Right Location: Choosing the perfect spot for your mums is essential. They thrive in well-draining soil and require at least six hours of sunlight each day. Make sure the area you choose provides them with the necessary light to flourish.

2. Prepare the Soil: Before planting your mums, it's crucial to prepare the soil. These flowers prefer slightly acidic soil with good drainage. You can amend your soil with compost or organic matter to improve its texture and nutrient content.

3. Choose Healthy Plants: When purchasing mums, select healthy, robust plants with vibrant green leaves. Avoid those with wilted or discolored foliage. This ensures a strong start for your new garden additions.

4. Planting Depth: Dig a hole that's about twice the size of the root ball of your mum plant. Place the plant in the hole, making sure it's at the same depth as it was in its nursery container. Space multiple plants at least 18 inches apart to allow for proper air circulation.

5. Watering: Water your newly planted mums thoroughly to help them settle into their new home. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering, as mums are susceptible to root rot. A layer of mulch around the base of the plants can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

6. Pruning and Pinching: To encourage bushier growth and more blooms, pinch back the tips of your mum plants when they reach about 6 inches in height. You can continue pinching every few weeks until early summer. After that, allow the plants to grow naturally.

7. Fertilize Sparingly: Mums do not require excessive fertilization. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers, as this can promote leggy growth and fewer flowers.

8. Protect from Frost: As the temperatures drop in late fall, consider protecting your mums from frost by covering them with a layer of mulch or a frost cloth. This will help extend their blooming period.

9. Enjoy the Colors: Once your mums start blooming, sit back and enjoy the vibrant display of autumn colors they bring to your garden. These hardy flowers can withstand light frost, making them a perfect addition to your fall landscape.

10. Overwintering: In areas with harsh winters, mums may not survive the cold. To overwinter them, mulch around the base of the plants and consider digging them up and storing them in a cool, dark place until the following spring.

Planting mums in the fall is a wonderful way to celebrate the beauty of the season. With a little care and attention, you can enjoy their vibrant hues and add a touch of autumn magic to your outdoor space. So, roll up your sleeves and get ready to plant mums for a garden that will continue to dazzle long after summer has faded away.
